UNBOUND
Divorce & Separation Jewellery
Your jewellery can change as your life does. Wedding rings, engagement rings and jewellery exchanged within a relationship can hold an extraordinary amount. When that relationship changes or comes to an end, deciding what to do with those pieces can feel complicated. UNBOUND is our bespoke service for transforming that jewellery into something you want to wear again.
Using the gold and precious stones already within your pieces, we can melt, remake, reset and redesign them into something created entirely for you.
Something Worth Keeping
There is no reason for beautiful gold and precious stones to remain hidden away simply because the meaning around them has changed.
A diamond can leave an engagement setting and become something completely different. Wedding bands can be melted and reformed. Gold from several pieces can be brought together. Existing stones can sit alongside newly sourced ones.
Sometimes very little needs to change. Sometimes the original piece disappears completely into the new one.
We begin with what you have and explore what it could become.

Holding the Transition
The ending of a relationship rarely carries one neat emotion.
There may be grief alongside relief, tenderness alongside anger, love for what existed and certainty that something has ended. There may be children, years of shared history, or simply a ring that once meant something very different from what it means today.
We understand that handing over this jewellery can carry weight.
Our role is to hold that process with care while bringing the focus gently towards the piece you want to create and wear now.
You are welcome to tell us the whole story, part of it, or none of it at all.

What Can We Create?
Almost anything begins with possibility.
An engagement ring might become a sculptural pendant. A wedding band might be melted into a new ring. A diamond might be reset alongside stones chosen especially for the new piece. Several pieces of gold might become one. Depending on the jewellery you bring us, we can explore:
Melting and reforming your existing gold
Resetting diamonds and gemstones
Combining gold from several pieces
Introducing new stones or additional precious metal
Creating rings, pendants, earrings, charms or other bespoke pieces
Transforming several pieces into a single new work
Before anything is dismantled, we assess your jewellery and talk you through what can safely be reused.

The Design
Every UNBOUND piece is individually designed.
You might arrive knowing exactly what you want, or with absolutely no idea beyond knowing that you are ready to do something with the jewellery you have. Both are welcome. We begin with a private consultation, looking at the existing pieces, their materials and stones, and what you are drawn towards now. from there, we develop a design in the language of Sara Rothwell Jewellery, working with the materials you already hold and introducing new elements where the piece calls for them.
Once the design and quotation are agreed, a 50% deposit begins the making process.

The Making
There is something particular about watching jewellery lose the form it once had.
Gold returns to heat. Stones are released from their settings. Familiar shapes disappear and the material becomes available to the hand again. From there, we make.
The gold is worked into its new form, stones are reset and the piece is finished by hand.
What remains is the same precious material, now made into something you have consciously chosen.
Using Your Own Gold
Using your existing gold can significantly reduce the material cost of a commission, particularly at today's gold prices.
Your gold is only one part of the cost of making the piece. Each commission also includes design, skilled labour and the specialist processes involved in testing, dismantling, melting, preparing, making, setting and finishing your jewellery.
We assess your pieces before quoting and will explain what can be reused, whether additional metal is required and how your existing materials affect the final price.

What Happens to Anything Left Over?
Where there is usable gold remaining after your piece has been made, we will discuss the options with you.
Depending on the quantity and material, it may be possible to return it to you, incorporate it into another piece or arrange for its scrap value to be credited against your commission.
Nothing is assumed. We agree this with you as part of the process.

Begin Your UNBOUND Commission
Perhaps the rings have been sitting in a drawer for years. Perhaps the separation is recent. Perhaps you already know exactly what you want them to become. There is no required point at which to begin.
Send us photographs of the jewellery you have, along with anything you know about the gold, stones or hallmarks. You can tell us a little about what you are imagining, or simply tell us that you don't know yet.
From there, we can arrange a private consultation and begin exploring what your jewellery might become.
