Gold has an extraordinary ability to endure.Long before it reaches us, it has travelled an immense journey. Once in our hands, we add our own histories to it. It is worn against skin, exchanged in love, inherited through families and carried through moments that leave their traces.A ring may have belonged to your grandmother. A chain may have travelled through several generations. There may be pieces you once wore every day that have spent years quietly tucked away.The form may no longer belong to your life, while the gold itself still holds meaning.
This is where Heirloom Gold Alchemy begins.
THE GOLD YOU HOLD
There is a particular feeling to gold that has already lived a life. From its cosmic origins to its life here on Earth, gold has travelled an extraordinary distance before it ever reaches our hands.
And then we add our own histories to it.
It is worn against skin. It moves through time, through relationships and generations, gathering memory, love and history along the way. It passes through moments that may leave no visible trace in the material, yet can still be deeply felt.
Sometimes it comes to us through loss. Sometimes through inheritance. Sometimes a piece has simply reached a point where its old form no longer feels quite right, while the gold itself still matters.
Through Heirloom Gold Alchemy, we begin with what you already hold. We meet the material and everything it may be carrying with care, whether its story can be named or simply felt.
The gold remains. Its form is allowed to change, carrying its history forward into something made to be worn and lived with again.
Transition
Gold often finds its way to us at times of change. It may have belonged to someone you loved, come through generations of your family, marked a relationship or simply accompanied an earlier version of your life.We understand that choosing to melt something with history can carry a great deal with it. There may be grief, tenderness, relief, love, uncertainty, or a mixture of things that are difficult to name.
We make room for all of that within the process, and you are welcome to share as much or as little of the story as feels right.
When we work with inherited family gold, we think of the transformation as a continuation of its story. The gold remains part of the family, but its form changes with you. Through the making of a new piece, there is an opportunity to create new meaning around something old, adding to the family mythology rather than fixing it in the past, or transmuting old stories that no longer serve.
The finished piece carries what came before into something that can be touched, worn and lived with now, ready to gather its own stories and, perhaps one day, be passed on again.
THE WORK
We begin by assessing the jewellery you bring us, looking at the gold, its carat, hallmarks, construction and any stones you would like to carry into the new piece.
From there, we explore what can be reused and what you would like to create. Existing stones can often be carefully removed and reset, several pieces of gold may be brought together, and additional precious metal or newly sourced gemstones can be introduced where the design requires them.
Once the design is agreed, your jewellery is dismantled and the gold prepared for transformation. Depending on the piece, it may be melted, refined, cast or worked by hand into its new form before being finished and any stones set.
Where gold remains after making, we will discuss whether you would like it returned, kept for a future piece or, where appropriate, credited at its scrap value.
Throughout the process, we keep you informed about what can be reused, what may need to be added and how your original materials are being carried into the finished piece.
WHAT CAN WE CREATE?
The possibilities depend on the gold and stones you bring us, but a Heirloom Gold Alchemy commission might involve:Melting and reforming inherited gold. Combining gold from several pieces or generations, resetting existing diamonds and gemstones, introducing newly sourced stones, adding precious metal where more is required. Creating rings, pendants, talismans, signets, earrings or other bespoke piecesBefore anything is dismantled, we assess your jewellery, its hallmarks, carat, construction and stones and talk you through what can safely and successfully be reused.
THE DESIGN
Every Heirloom Gold Alchemy piece is individually designed. You may already know exactly what you would like your gold to become, or you may simply know that you are ready to wear it again. We begin with a private consultation, looking at the pieces you have brought us and talking about what you are drawn towards.From there, we develop a design within the language and style of Sara Rothwell Jewellery, allowing the history of the material and the person who will wear it now to inform the piece.Once the design and quotation have been agreed, a 50% deposit begins the making process.
THE MAKING
Your jewellery is carefully dismantled and any stones that are to be retained are removed. The gold is prepared for its transformation and, where appropriate, returned to heat. This is one of the most compelling parts of the process. A recognisable object becomes material again, ready to take another form.From there, your new piece is made, worked and finished by hand, with stones reset and details added according to the design we have created together. The gold that arrives back to you has history within it, now carrying a form that belongs to your life.
USING YOUR OWN GOLD
Using your existing gold can significantly reduce the material cost of a commission, particularly at today's gold prices. Your gold forms one part of the value and cost of creating the finished piece. The commission also includes the design work, skilled craftsmanship and specialist processes involved in assessing, dismantling, preparing, melting, casting, making, setting and finishing your jewellery. We take the precious metal you bring us into consideration when preparing your quotation and will explain what can be reused, whether additional gold is required and how your existing materials shape the final cost.
WHAT HAPPENS TO ANY GOLD LEFT OVER?
Depending on the design, there may be precious metal remaining once your new piece has been made.Where there is usable gold left over, we will discuss the possibilities with you. It may be returned, kept for another commission, incorporated into an additional piece or, where appropriate, its scrap value may be credited towards the work.We agree this with you as part of your commission.
WHEN GOLD SHOULD REMAIN AS IT IS?
Part of working with inherited jewellery is knowing when to leave something alone. Not every piece needs to be melted, and occasionally the history, construction, stones or character of a piece means we may recommend preserving it in its existing form or finding another approach. We will always tell you what we see in the jewellery before anything irreversible happens. The decision to transform it should feel fully considered.
